Cruise to Denmark 1985
I
recently, in a fit of nostalgia, dug out my photo album of a
cruise to Demark in 1985. To my horror I found that the photos were
rapidly deteriorating, and had taken on the hue of tobacco stains! So I
set about scanning them, and attempting to enhance them to something
like their original appearance. The results are not great, but I
thought that it would be worth adding them to the site as another
cruise, particularly as this year is the 21st anniversary of that trip.

In
those days, my friend Fred and myself had succeed in passing the exams
for the RYA/DTP Yachtmaster Offshore. We both had also passed the
"Ocean" shorebased course, and there remained the practical test . This
involved a 600 nautical mile cruise, non stop, most of which had to be
100 miles from shore, and during that trip we had to keep a log of all
activities and resolve at least 2 positions by sextant,
together
with compass correction by sun.
So it was that we set off in late June, Fred, Paul, John and Andrew, my
trusty sailing mates looking for an adventure, and by jove we found it!
I'll let the pictures tell the story:-

We
were away for 3 weeks and covered just over 1000 miles. We
survived a near gale in the Skagerak, rounded the Skaw, and reached the
East coast of Jutland in 4 days. My old friend Ole and his family
entertained us royally during our stay on the island of Fur in the
middle of the Limfjord. He also joined us on our return trip back to
UK. Sadly the return trip was plagued by light contrary winds, and we
had to motor the whole way, 3 days from Tyboron to Harwich.
It was a very memorable trip though. Oh! and as an aside, Fred and
myself achieved our Ocean certificates.
